What Long-Haul Driving Does to the Spine
Sustained seated driving with vibration loading is one of the more destructive occupational exposures for the lumbar spine. The intervertebral discs are being compressed and sheared repeatedly across an entire shift. The thoracic spine gradually loses mobility from being held in flexion for hours at a time. The right SI joint often develops asymmetric restriction from clutch operation in manual transmission trucks. Cervical strain accumulates from sustained forward gaze and frequent mirror checking.
