Which Clinic in Jacksonville Offers Shockwave Therapy for Back Pain?

Full Swing Healthcare on Beach Blvd in Jacksonville offers shockwave therapy for chronic back pain, particularly for paraspinal muscle conditions and fascial restrictions that haven't resolved with other care.

A patient came to us two years ago with bilateral lumbar paraspinal pain that had been present for over a year. He'd tried massage therapy regularly, had done a PT program, and had been taking muscle relaxants intermittently. The paraspinal muscles would improve temporarily and then tighten right back up. When Dr. Muren assessed him the underlying problem was a chronic L3-L4 facet restriction that was causing the paraspinals to continuously guard. We ran chiropractic adjustments to address the facet restriction alongside shockwave sessions targeting the chronically hypertonic lumbar multifidus and erector spinae. The combination broke the cycle. Six sessions in, the paraspinals weren't reverting between visits for the first time in over a year.

When Shockwave Is Appropriate for Back Pain

Shockwave therapy for back pain is most appropriate for chronic soft tissue conditions: paraspinal muscle tendinopathy, thoracolumbar fascial restriction, and the chronic muscle tightness that develops as a secondary response to long-standing spinal dysfunction. It is not the first line of treatment for acute disc injuries or fractures. For those presentations we start with chiropractic, possible referral for imaging, and conservative management before introducing shockwave.

Why We Combine Shockwave with Chiropractic for Back Pain

Back pain almost always has two components: the joint restriction or disc issue at the structural level, and the muscular guarding response that develops around it. Chiropractic addresses the structural component. Shockwave addresses the chronically dysfunctional soft tissue. Running both together, as we do for the right presentations, produces better and more lasting results than either alone. The acoustic waves break down the tissue's non-healing pattern while the adjustment removes the mechanical input that was causing the tissue to guard in the first place.

What the Sessions Feel Like

We use the StemWave device, which delivers extracorporeal acoustic wave therapy. Treatment over the lumbar paraspinal muscles produces a pulsing, deep pressure sensation. Most patients find it tolerable and significantly less uncomfortable than they expected. Sessions run 10 to 15 minutes on the back. Mild soreness for 24 hours afterward is normal and expected.
