Feeling fine after a crash doesn’t mean you’re uninjured. Adrenaline masks pain for hours, and soft tissue swelling can take 24 to 72 hours to fully develop, which is why many Jacksonville drivers don’t feel the real impact until day three or four. The critical thing to know: Florida’s PIP law gives you only 14 days from the date of the accident to seek care, not 14 days from when symptoms appear.
Why Pain Shows Up Late
At the moment of a collision, your body floods with adrenaline. That stress response is powerful enough to dampen pain signals for hours, sometimes through the rest of the day and into the night. By the time the adrenaline fades, your body’s inflammatory response is just getting started. Injured soft tissue swells gradually. Muscles surrounding the hurt area tighten into protective guarding. Nerve endings in the damaged tissue become increasingly sensitized. The full picture often doesn’t land until day three or four.
Symptoms That Commonly Show Up After a Delay
- Neck stiffness and limited rotation: the most common delayed symptom from rear-end impacts. Cervical muscles go into guarding first, and tension headaches that follow within the first week almost always trace back to those cervical joints and muscles, not the brain itself.
- Low back pain: often the slowest to develop, sometimes not appearing until day three to five. Even low-speed impacts send compressive and shear forces through the lumbar spine, and the surrounding muscles respond with guarding that builds over several days.
- Shoulder pain: frequently caused by the seatbelt mechanism. Lateral shoulder discomfort two to three days after the accident is a telltale sign.
- Headaches: cervicogenic headaches developing within the first week are a classic post-collision symptom that respond well to chiropractic care.
The 14-Day PIP Window Starts at the Crash, Not the Symptoms
Florida Statute 627.736 is unambiguous: the clock starts on the date of the accident. If you were in a crash on a Tuesday, you have until the Monday of the following week to be evaluated, regardless of whether your neck started bothering you on Wednesday or Saturday.
We’ve had patients call us on day twelve or thirteen, symptoms having developed slowly over nearly two weeks. They were still within the window, and we saw them immediately. But we’d much rather hear from you on day two. The earlier your clinical record starts, the cleaner the documentation for your PIP claim, and the sooner we can begin helping you heal.
