What's Included in an Acupuncture Session in Jacksonville?

An acupuncture session at Full Swing Healthcare starts with an assessment, not needles, we need to know what we're treating before we decide how to treat it.

I remember a first-time patient who came in expecting to lie on a table and get needled within five minutes. She'd seen something like that at a spa acupuncture place and thought that was the standard. When Dr. Muren sat down, reviewed her history, palpated her lumbar and sacral region, and explained that her hip pain was related to an L5-S1 movement restriction she didn't know she had, she stopped and said, "No one has ever done that before." That's what an actual clinical intake looks like versus a wellness-spa session. They're different things.

Your First Acupuncture Session

The first visit is longer than follow-up sessions. It includes a full health history intake covering your primary complaint, any relevant medical history, current medications, and any prior treatment you've had. Dr. Muren then does a physical assessment, palpating the tissue, assessing range of motion, and identifying the structural and neurological patterns relevant to your case. This builds your personalized acupuncture plan. Once that's established, needle placement is selected specifically for you. You rest with the needles in place for 20 to 25 minutes. Dr. Muren reassesses at the end to gauge the immediate tissue response.

Follow-Up Sessions

Return visits are shorter. You'll do a brief check-in about how you felt after the previous session, any soreness, any improvement, any changes in your symptoms. Dr. Muren adjusts the protocol based on your response. Needle placement may shift as the condition evolves. The goal is to keep adapting the treatment to where you actually are, not to run the same protocol every visit.

What the Needles Feel Like

Acupuncture needles are not like injection needles. They're thin, solid, and flexible, far smaller in diameter than a blood draw needle. Most placements produce a dull, achy, or mild pressure sensation as the needle reaches the target tissue. This is normal and expected. Some patients feel very little. Some feel a brief twitch response as the muscle fiber releases. Needles are sterile and single-use.

What Happens After the Session

Most patients feel relaxed or slightly tired after treatment, that's a normal response. Some feel immediate improvement. Mild soreness at needle sites for 24 hours is also normal. We typically recommend avoiding intense physical exertion the same day. Drinking water and resting when possible accelerates the response.
