TMJ and jaw pain relief in Jacksonville starts with looking at more than the jaw. The temporomandibular joint sits just in front of each ear, and when it hurts, clicks or tires out halfway through a meal, the muscles that move it are usually overworked, and the neck and posture behind it are often part of why. We assess the jaw and the neck together, then treat both.

Signs your jaw is the problem

TMJ problems show up in a handful of ways, and most people have more than one:

  • Jaw pain: an ache in front of the ear or along the jaw that is worse after chewing, talking or first thing in the morning
  • Clicking or popping: a noise when you open or close, sometimes with a catch
  • Limited opening: a jaw that will not open fully, or shifts to one side as it opens
  • Clenching and grinding: sore teeth or a tired jaw on waking, often noticed first by a dentist or a partner
  • Headaches at the temples: tension that wraps around the sides of the head
  • Ear symptoms: fullness or aching in the ear with no ear infection behind it

Why the jaw and neck hurt together

The jaw muscles, the neck muscles and the muscles at the base of the skull work as one system. Clenching through a stressful day or grinding at night keeps the jaw muscles in a low grade contraction they never fully release, and trigger points in those muscles refer pain up into the temples and down into the neck. Forward head posture from hours at a screen changes how the jaw rests and closes, which adds load to the joint itself.

That overlap is why jaw pain and headaches so often arrive together. If headaches are part of your picture, our headaches page explains how we treat that side of it.

How we treat TMJ

We look at how your jaw opens and closes, how it tracks and where it is tender, and we check the neck and upper back. Then we treat what is feeding the problem.

Dry needling

Targets the trigger points buried in the jaw, neck and traps that refer pain up into the head and keep the jaw clenched, releasing knots that hands alone cannot reach. See dry needling.

Acupuncture

LI4, a point in the web of the hand, is a workhorse for head, neck and jaw complaints, combined with points around the jaw and the neck. See acupuncture.

Neck and upper back adjustments

The top of the neck gets adjusted here both by hand and with the Activator, gently, depending on what the exam finds and what you are comfortable with. Easing the neck takes load off the jaw. See chiropractic adjustments.

Habits that feed it

Resting jaw position, screen posture, gum chewing and daytime clenching, with a short list of changes that let the jaw muscles finally rest.

When to see your dentist first

Some jaw problems belong with a dentist or an oral surgeon. A jaw that locks open or closed, a bite that suddenly feels different, pain after a blow to the face, or a tooth problem behind the ache should be checked there first. If you grind at night, a dentist can fit a night guard to protect your teeth, and it pairs well with the muscle work we do. We are happy to work alongside your dentist.

A jaw that aches every evening is not something to live with. Same-day appointments are often available. Call (904) 539-3352 and we’ll look at your jaw and your neck together.

TMJ and jaw pain relief for San Marco, Deerwood and the Beaches

Full Swing Healthcare is at 13770 Beach Blvd #4, an easy drive from San Marco, Deerwood, Southside and Baymeadows, and minutes from Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. Jaw muscles that have clenched for years usually need a few visits to let go, so a clinic close to work or home makes the plan easy to keep.

Easing your jaw before your appointment

Keep your teeth apart and your jaw relaxed when you are not eating; lips together, teeth apart is a good rule. Choose softer foods for a few days, cut food into small pieces, and skip gum and very chewy foods. Warmth on the side of the face can relax tight jaw muscles. Notice when you clench during the day, at the desk or in traffic, and let it go each time you catch it.

TMJ questions

Can a chiropractor help TMJ?

Often, yes, because so much TMJ pain comes from overworked jaw muscles and a neck that is feeding the problem. We treat the muscles and the neck, and we refer you to a dentist when the joint itself or your teeth need their attention.

Why does my jaw click?

Clicking usually means the small disc inside the joint is not moving smoothly with the jaw. A click without pain is common and often harmless. A click with pain, catching, or a jaw that locks is worth having checked.

Is TMJ connected to headaches?

Very often. The jaw muscles refer pain into the temples, and clenching and tension headaches tend to travel together. Easing the jaw muscles frequently eases the headaches too.

Do I need a referral or insurance to be seen?

No referral needed, just call or book online. We accept Florida Blue, United Healthcare, Humana, Cigna, Florida Medicaid, and VA benefits, and we’re happy to verify your coverage before you come in.
