What Is a DOT Physical and Who Needs One?

A DOT physical is a federally required medical exam for commercial motor vehicle drivers. It evaluates vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall fitness to drive safely. It must be performed by a certified medical examiner listed in the FMCSA National Registry.

If you drive a commercial motor vehicle for work, this exam isn't optional. It's a federal requirement under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Full Swing Healthcare has certified DOT medical examiners on staff and keeps the process fast and straightforward so you can get back on the road.

Who Needs One

You need a DOT physical if you operate any of the following in interstate commerce:

  • Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more

  • Vehicles designed to transport 9 or more passengers including the driver for compensation

  • Vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver not for compensation

  • Vehicles of any size transporting hazardous materials requiring placards

That covers truck drivers, bus drivers, delivery drivers operating larger vehicles, and various specialized transport operators throughout the Jacksonville area.

What the Exam Covers

A DOT physical is a comprehensive evaluation of your fitness to safely operate a commercial vehicle:

  • Vision test: must meet minimum acuity standards with or without corrective lenses

  • Hearing test: must perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear

  • Blood pressure and pulse: evaluated according to FMCSA guidelines

  • Urinalysis: screens for diabetes and kidney function, not a drug screen

  • Physical examination: cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and neurological systems

  • Health history review: any conditions that could affect driving safety

Most DOT physicals at Full Swing Healthcare are completed in 30 to 45 minutes. No long waits. No unnecessary delays.

How Long Is the Certificate Valid?

A DOT medical certificate is valid for up to 24 months for drivers who meet all health standards without conditions. Drivers with certain conditions like controlled hypertension or diabetes may receive shorter certifications of 6 or 12 months and need more frequent exams to stay compliant.

What If You Have a Medical Condition?

Having a medical condition doesn't automatically disqualify you from commercial driving. Controlled hypertension, well-managed diabetes, certain vision or hearing limitations. Many of these can be accommodated under current FMCSA guidelines. Dr. Muren reviews your health history thoroughly, determines your certification status based on federal standards, and clearly explains your options if any concerns come up.
